Tiny, cheap, and “green” Linux computers. And Al Gore. And Flash Gordon.

If you stay online long enough, you’re bound to find convergences in ideas where you weren’t looking for them.
Here’s where my net trail led me:

  • Reading news: Al Gore wins the Nobel Peace prize, along with the IPCC.
  • Shopping: While looking for a cheap computer (a refurburbished laptop, a bare-bones desktop?) that I could put Edubuntu onto (you know, for the children), I found that the fit-PC exists, and that it is linux (and Ubuntu) compatible. And it sounds very cool (and it’s tiny, and cheap, and sips electricity).
  • Still shopping: I then found that there are actually a whole class of tiny systems which have evolved while I was busy trying to figure out other things.
  • On a tangent: Including (perhaps my favorite for my purposes), the Koolu, which comes with Ubuntu installed.
  • Really distracted now (what was I doing again?): Finally, I stumble across this story, which features Al Gore talking about embedded devices saving the planet.

  • Off in the weeds. Cue Flash Gordon theme: video.
  • OK. Random section complete. Remember Koolu and fit-PC. I’ll be looking for reviews of them and others in the future (if you’ve seen any, feel free to point me to them).
